Isolation: the epicentre of the mental health recession?

Image
Since the dawn of time, human beings have evolved together. Groups of individuals have been defined as tribes.   By design, we work better and are more efficient within tribes.  To define a tribe is simply a social group of humans.  Other terminologies used to describe tribes include indigenous, natives and hunter gatherers. In today's society, these terminologies could be seen as archaic, but it is only since the late 1960's that this term within anthropological contexts ceased usage. Now, the few remaining isolated pockets of civilisation are commonly referred to as tribes. Shared goals; culture, rights of passage and brotherhood are vital elements that provide real meaning to these individuals' existence. Sounds distant, right? The Maasai people are a well known community residing in Kenya and Tanzania. They have received much mainstream media coverage and documentary features for their vibrant dress and courageous existence. Populations of the Masaai people are estimate

Motivation < Discipline

Motivation < Discipline Something that has had a profound impact on my life in terms of productivity and holistic progress is understanding the roles of motivation and discipline. It is a fascinating subject which when digested really can alter mindsets and launch you on a positive and progressive trajectory towards self-development.  Motivation can be described as the “desire to complete a task”. Individuals can feel motivated to workout, as an example. This motivation often stems from previous progress or by watching something that inspires individuals to improve themselves. Motivation compartmentalised means motive. When somebody has a motive, they have a reason. Motivation typically stems from two different places: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation can be more easily understood as the motivation that comes from within us, such as an internal desire to complete a task. Extrinsic motivation is motivation that comes from external sources such as the articles we read, vi

Gratification

Gratification Have you ever known someone who is able to rise out of bed at 6am every single morning and head straight to the gym. They always seem productive. Busy just getting things done. Are these people born motivated? “Do they have naturally more drive than me? They are lucky that they are able to do something they love”, you may say to yourself. I would argue its more than likely quite the opposite. It’s a learned behaviour. We all have days where motivation is absent. Our minds are screaming at us to do the right thing, but we just don’t feel like it. So we say “maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow I’ll feel like doing it. It won’t hurt for one day”. If we solely relied on motivation as a means of task completion, well…the evidence is in plain sight, we wouldn’t get much done whatsoever. Fortunately, we don’t need to rely on motivation. What if I said that discipline was a major factor. Provided we have discipline, we can hold ourselves accountable to getting things done, knowing we

Taking Action

This blog has been something I’ve been thinking of writing and subsequently putting off for some time. It has been too easy to deny any ownership. However I felt somewhat compelled to share the significance of good mental health from my own experiences. The movement surrounding ‘ mental health ’ has risen in prominence, particularly amongst younger individuals within recent years. The impact of poor mental health however really isn’t understood internally until it is experienced. It is easy enough to read countless self-help books around meditation and mindfulness, and to binge watch self-help gurus preach on YouTube for no other reason than self-validation. I’ve done all of this, believe me. The stumbling block for many actually lies in taking action. This blog will be very rough around the edges. The message I aim to convey however, far supersedes the quality of writing. Please bear with. It is in the hope that I can offer both insights into my experiences regarding mental health and
